My First Fashion Week: GT Fashion Weekend

Asalam alaikum beautiful people,

Fashion week is something I’ve always wanted to attend for a while now, since I became very fashion inclined. As most of you know I schooled in Ghana, fashion week clashed with school all the time. Last year I followed fashion week through the media I even published a post:Modest (Hijab Friendly) Pieces from LFDW 2017 Runway Even though I missed the LFDW because I was unavailable again, I was able to attend this year’s GT Fashion Weekend. In this post I will be sharing my experience as a whole from what I wore, the runway shows and the organization of the event.

I was quite nervous in terms of what to wear because from the media people are always doing the most for fashion week but I decided to maintain my style and not be pressured to overdo or under-do anything. I wore an adire dress, white sneakers for the sole purpose of comfort ( I could have worn heels but my common sense advised me against it), a white mini bag and a white hijab because I like colour coordination.

What I am wearing

Dress: custom made by my tailor, fabric gotten from Adum market (Kumasi, Ghana)

Shoes: Nike

Bag: Forever 21

When I arrived at the venue, it was very beautiful. Honestly it was nicer than I envisioned. The Fashion Weekend was divided into (3) sections: The runway shows, master classes and fashion retail.

I attended a master class by Stravos Karelis and Anna Trevelyan on “The Concept of Curating Fashion. The master class was very coordinated, entry was based on invite, they were on time and I was very happy about that.

The fashion retail was properly organized and a lot of your favourite stores present, everything fashion was sold there even beauty too. You know when you go for all those shopping fairs and there are so many people, the sun is scorching and you’re just left with discomfort due to the heat. Well GT did their best to reduce that feeling  and made the shopping experience as comfortable as possible, they shared free fans and water to everyone, they also had air conditioners and fans to help with ventilation and cooling.

The runway shows  were good,  the decor was great and they were relatively punctual. Ituen Basi opened the show with a dance and a collection influenced by Fela’s wives which featured Fela songs.

My favourite designer for the night was  Clive Rundle probably because he had modest pieces, call me biased. We were also given refreshments: cashew nuts, water, popcorn ( it was quite soggy) and a goody bag containing a magazine and a raincoat.

Things I wish could change next year: For the runway shows I would love them to be more coordinated as the master class were. In terms of entry and invite, because the queue and struggle for the runway shows wasn’t a joke. The chair arrangement should be changed to something sloping if you are not sitting in front it’s a struggle to see the outfits properly.

All in all it was a great experience, most things were well thought out, attendance was free which is a plus and finally I get to stop fantasizing about attending GT Fashion week, I can now fantasize about London, Paris, Milan and the rest.

Will I be attending it next year? Yes, If someone dashes me an all access pass and a front row seat, just joking if I am available Insha Allah I will be there.

Thanks for stopping by as always, see you in my next post Insha Allah
